Calling is done in the very early morning and late afternoon. These are the times when the moose are on the move and if all is well can he enticed to the hunter's lair. Nights when the full moon is shining brightly is also an excellent time for this sort of hunting. Day time on the other hand is seldom productive of results. The moose spends a good part of the day lying down and it is almost impossible to entice him with the call. During the day, there is a favoring wind blowing, the moose hunter pins his faith upon still hunting or " creeping the moose " as it is known in Nova Scotia. We had planned to get up early next morning and try our luck again at calling. But instead of the hopedfor chill, still, clear air, there came torrents of beating rain. Calling was out of the question. I agreed with an expression of opinion Johnny, the cook, had voiced two days before in commenting upon the dubious Fall weather of the year. Johnny had said with quiet disgust: "By golly, I never see sech weather. All summer she rained and blowed and now she blows and rains." We slept till an outrageously late hour for moose hunters. Then we ate moose for breakfast and contented ourselves with talking about moose while the rain drove down in torrents. When I questioned Bert about the ways of moose I found him always ready to give cheerfully enough an opinion, but not so willing to make a definite statement as to just what a moose would or would not do under certain circumstances.
